wai khru ceremony wai khru ceremony

The most important event to be held at school is the annual Wai Kru Ceremony. Like other schools around the country this always takes place towards the start of the new academic year and always on a Thursday. The students pay respect to their teachers by presenting them with flowers and going down onto the floor to do a krab which is the most respectful way to show respect. The students hope to gain merit and good fortune for the coming year.

Likay Likay

The next time you are in Thailand, you might have the opportunity to watch a likay. This is a kind of outdoors entertainment that is put on to please the masses. It is what people used to watch in the old days before the era of television and soap operas. There is plenty of fun and laughter but also plenty of singing. It is easy to spot a likay from a mile away. First there are the very bright lights and extremely loud sound system. Then when you get nearer you will notice the actors are wearing brightly coloured costumes that twinkle under the lights. These shows are often put on for free at funerals or other events. If you like a particular actor or actress you can give them a garland of paper money.

 Elephant Game  Elephant Game

The Thai people tend to be very superstitious. They will do anything to give themselves and their families a better life. They will do anything to rubbing the bark on a tree to find winning lottery numbers to playing lucky fortune games at the temples. I already told you about the numbered sticks in a pot that they shake. This one is less common. Basically, what you have to do is kneel in front of the shrine and make a wish. You then have to try and pick up the elephant. Women have to use the middle finger of their right hand. Men have to use the little finger of their left hand. Who do you think will find it easier? Men or women? Watch the video and find out!

Crocodile Show in Samut Prakan Crocodile Show

There are a number of places in Thailand where you can watch crocodile wrestling shows. This video was taken at my local Crocodile Farm in Samut Prakan. The act looks a bit dangerous but I have seen it so many times now I know exactly what will happen next. Routines include: sliding across the floor to put money into the crocodile's mouth, putting their head in the mouth, putting their hand in the mouth and picking up the crocodiles. If you are a bit squeamish then don't watch this video! The ending is very surprising!

Tuk Tuk in Bangkok Riding a tuk tuk in Thailand

One of the most famous icons of Thailand is the tuk tuk (pronounced "took took" with a short "oo" sound). This is our motorized rickshaw. We also have man powered ones called samlors. I wouldn't suggest you take a tuk tuk often in Bangkok. This is because they can be expensive, dangerous and dirty. You are low down and the exhaust fumes of passing buses will make you cover your nose. The drivers also have a reputation of cheating their customers or taking them to places they didn't want to go! For myself, I always go by air-conditioned taxi. The starting rate for this is only 35 baht on the meter. For the same journey, the tuk tuk driver might ask you for 60 baht! Having said all of that, you should at least try one journey on a tuk tuk before you leave Thailand.
