Chinese Fortune Shaker Reading the fortune

Although this isn't much to do with Buddhism, you will find these Chinese Fortune Sticks in most temples. To play the game is quite simple. You put all the sticks into the bamboo container and then shake it as you concentrate on a prayer. If you do it correctly, one stick will then jump out onto the ground in front of you. Each stick has a number on it. You then go and read the fortune with this number printed at the top.

Elephant rides Elephant show

In many places in Thailand, you can go to watch elephant shows. The video I want to show you today is of a show at the Crocodile Farm in Samut Prakan. Apart from the thousands of crocodiles there are also elephants. You can even ride on one for ten minutes which will cost you only 50 baht (about $1.20). During the elephant show you will see elephants painting, walking the tightrope and dancing to disco music. There is also a section of the show where volunteers are invited to lie down and let an elephant walk over them! Would you do that? Watch the video and see some people that didn't seem so scared at first.

Three headed elephant Inside the pedestal

The latest tourist attraction in my province is Chang Erawan, the giant Three Headed Elephant. As you drive along Sukhumwit Road from Bangkok to Samut Prakan you cannot fail to notice this 29 metre high elephant. If you count the building it stands on then it is 43.6 metres high! It only costs 50 baht to wander around the gardens and another 100 baht to enter the museum in the basement and then up to the belly of the elephant. One of its back legs is a lift to a viewpoint of the surrounding area. The stained glass window in this picture is the top of the base where the elephant stands. You can see all of this in the video.

School students School students

This video is for people out there who are learning Thai. Just for fun, I thought I would ask the students in my class to recite the five times table in Thai! I think it is a cute video as I like it how fast they recite their tables. A word of warning, even if you know your Thai numbers it is not easy to follow! Here is a guide: "haa neung haa" (five one five), "haa song sib" (five two ten), "haa sam sib-haa" (five three fifteen) etc.

Monk and tiger Boy having picture taken with tiger

In Kanchanaburi, there is an unusual temple that has the nickname of "Tiger Temple". The real name is Wat Pa Luangta Bua Yannasampanno. The monks at this temple have a reputation of looking after stray tigers. They started with a baby tiger cub but now the tigers outnumber the monks two to one. During the night, the tigers are kept in cages. But during the day they are taken for a walk to a nearby canyon. Here, tourists are allowed to interact with the tigers in a limited way. For a 300 baht donation, you are allowed to have your picture taken as many times as you like sitting with the tigers. The donations are being collected so that they will have enough money to build a better environment for the tigers on a small man-made island.
